Requirements

In Filipino Martial Arts (FMA), the basic motor skills involve coordination, agility, balance, and reflexes to efficiently use weapons and empty-hand techniques. These skills can be broken down into fundamental movement patterns:

1. Grip & Weapon Handling

  • Proper grip on sticks, blades, or training weapons
  • Wrist flexibility for fluid strikes and control
  • Switching grips for different techniques

2. Striking Mechanics

  • Angle striking – Basic strikes come from different angles (commonly 12 or more)
  • Snapping & follow-through strikes – Quick, controlled hits vs. powerful slashes
  • Striking with both hands – Develops ambidexterity

3. Footwork & Mobility

  • Triangle footwork – Moving in a triangular pattern for offense/defense
  • Lateral & diagonal stepping – Avoiding attacks while countering
  • Pivoting & zoning – Controlling distance and positioning

4. Blocking & Deflections

  • Checking (redirecting an attack)
  • Parrying (light redirections)
  • Cross-blocks and high/low defenses

5. Coordination & Flow Drills

  • Sinawali (Weaving Drills) – Helps with coordination and muscle memory
  • Hubud-Lubud (Tying & Untying Hands) – Close-range sensitivity training
  • Punyos (Butt-End Strikes) – Striking with the stick’s base for control

6. Empty-Hand Applications

  • Translating weapon movements into hand strikes (Panantukan – Filipino boxing)
  • Joint locks and disarms (Dumog – Filipino grappling)
  • Clinch fighting and control techniques

7. Reflex & Reaction Training

  • Drills to improve reaction time
  • Partner drills for adaptability
  • Sparring to test real-time application
