Nubia Red Magic 5G review: a gaming-oriented smartphone

After its Red Magic 3 which had not convinced, Nubia is once again attacking the very small market for gaming smartphones with its Red Magic 5G. An excellent device for playing, somewhat sealed by the software overlay.

Nubia launched its Red Magic 5G smartphone last May and leaves no doubt as to the target audience: gamers. It is a very powerful device, with a large 144 hertz screen , touch triggers and a rather flashy design. The manufacturer offers it on its site from 579 euros. It finds itself facing the Asus ROG Phone 2, launched at 699 euros, as well as the Black Shark 3 and its Pro version of Xiaomi displayed at 599 euros and 899 euros respectively. We were able to take over the 8 GB / 128 GB Eclipse Black version, the most sober version: a real beast of power, but not without flaws.

An imposing but not excessive mobile

At first grip, the mobile is, unsurprisingly, quite large and heavy, with a weight of 218 grams, a thickness of almost a centimeter and a length of 168 millimeters. For a gaming smartphone, this is not surprising, and you get used to it very quickly. The size is in part due to the fairly wide borders at the top and bottom of the screen, which notably contain the front camera. If this choice is not in the current trend, this avoids having a notch which takes the place of a button in play, and allows to better hold the phone like a controller.

The back cover remains quite sober for a gaming mobile, except for the logo which lights up in different colors . Placed in this way at the back, the user hardly ever sees it … The shell is however very smooth, and slides a little too easily on a table. So be careful when you put it down, only lightning reflexes saved it from several falls .

The gamer side is a total success

Nubia has promised a gamer smartphone and the Red Magic 5G does not disappoint. It sports a large, bright 6.65-inch Amoled screen, which displays a Full HD + definition of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels , and above all a refresh rate of 144 hertz. A rate that unfortunately few games support, including Red Racing 3 which provides a real pleasure to play with such fluidity.

Thanks to the fastest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC on the market, the smartphone does not lack power. He is able to run all mobile games without batting an eyelid. The mobile has good quality stereo speakers, more than enough to orient yourself by ear in the game and know which way enemy fire is coming from. To prevent overheating, the manufacturer has integrated a liquid cooling system associated with a fan . It is a bit noisy but just plug a headset into the 3.5mm jack port for a more immersive experience.
