Tesla Model 3 interior camera and autonomous taxis: Elon Musk drops clues

Elon Musk confirmed that the camera integrated in the interior mirror of the Model 3 would be used to monitor the passengers of the future autonomous taxi service that Tesla intends to create from its installed fleet.

In 2016, Elon Musk published the second part of his master plan defining Tesla’s future strategy . In addition to manufacturing buses, trucks and an electric pick-up (the Cybertruck ), he announced that he wanted to offer an autonomous taxi service that all Tesla owners could join in order to earn income from their vehicle when they don’t use it.

Last year, the bubbling boss declared before an audience of investors: ”  I can announce autonomous” robotaxis “for next year with a high degree of certainty “. And here he is, who just hit the nail on the head by answering a question via Twitter where he says that the autonomous driving functionality will be ready this year. However, he added that the regulatory green light remains the ”  big unknown  “. In other words, Tesla could be technically ready to activate the robotaxis but it is unlikely that it will get the green light from the authorities by the end of 2020.

Tesla Model 3’s “Caraoke” Mode Could Use This Camera

We know that the Tesla can be equipped with all the material infrastructure necessary for autonomous driving, the idea being to activate the function when the time comes. And precisely, Elon Musk also confirmed that the camera integrated into the interior mirror of the Model 3 is intended to monitor the passengers of the future autonomous taxi service. Currently, this camera is not operational, but two hackers had fun activating it to give us an idea of how it works.

In addition to the “robotaxis” service, there is also talk of it being used for the karaoke mode introduced with the V10 update of the Tesla OS.
