how to transfer your SMS on a Mac or a PC?

Want to free up space on your iPhone, while keeping your most important conversations? Store your SMS on a Mac, a PC or another iPhone!

Save your SMS with iCloud

If your iPhone is saved on the iCloud, then your SMS (as well as your photos, videos, call history, ringtones, …) are copied automatically.

It will be very easy for you to restore them on your new smartphone.

This technique is especially useful when you buy a new iPhone.

Indeed, the disadvantage with saving messages on the iCloud is that it is part of a set. If you want to transfer messages from your iPhone to another model, you must restore all the settings of your old phone. Note that new messages that you have received on your iPhone will be erased with this process.

Here you will find a list of all items saved by iCloud.

Follow these steps to transfer your messages (and all other items) from your iPhone to another via iCloud:

  1. Plug your old iPhone into a jack and turn on Wi-Fi.
  2. If you have an iPhone iOS8 or higher: Tap Settings → iCloud → Storage & Backup → iCloud Backup.
For iOS7 and earlier versions: Tap Settings → iCloud → iCloud Backup.
  3. Check that iCloud Backup is enabled, otherwise enable it.
  4. Tap Save Now and wait until the operation is complete. Do not disable Wi-Fi.
  5. Turn on your new iPhone. Configure it if it is not already done. Then, when asked, select Restore from iCloud and Next.
If it was already configured, you will need to reset it. Open Settings and go to General→ Reset → Clear Contents and Settings.
  6. Enter your Apple ID and Password.

Your new iPhone will now have all your messages, applications, photos already present on your old.

Transfer your messages to a Mac

If you want to transfer your SMS to another iPhone via a backup, help yourself with third-party software.

For this technique, we used PhoneView (only in English). There is the trial version, free, and pay, at about 27 €.

Here’s how to go about it:

  1. Install PhoneView on your Mac.
  2. Connect your iPhone to your Mac.
  3. Launch PhoneView and click OK on the PhoneView message would like to access your contacts ( PhoneView would like to have access to your contact list).
  4. In PhoneView, click Archives displayed in the alert window.
  5. Click Messages on the sidebar, and then OK in the Now Loading Phone Data window. The transfer of your stored data will take a few minutes, follow its progress thanks to the blue bar displayed.
  6. The names of people you have had conversations with will appear in the Name column. Select one to see your SMS exchanged.
  7. You can drag and drop the name of this person on your desktop to keep the conversation in pdf format.
  8. To extract all your messages, select All (All), and then click Copy from iPhone Copy from the iPhone).
Choose your backup location and click Save (Save).

PhoneView can also convert your pdf SMS to other formats, such as .txt , .tsv or .tab , csv or. xml , very convenient for an Excel file, for example.

Unfortunately, copying these SMS messages again in the Messages application will not be possible. To read your SMS, you can still use compatible applications like iBooks which is a very good alternative, but, it prefers GoodReader, especially for SMS exported in pdf.

Otherwise, you can send them to you by email or copy them with iTunes File Sharing.

Transfer your messages to a PC

If you opt for the PC, you can transfer your SMS and photos!

Like on a Mac, you will need third-party software.

For this little tutorial, we chose CopyTrans, it is simple and pleasant to use. Its test version gives you the opportunity to save a conversation of 200 exchanges.

Once the CopyTrans Control Center has been downloaded, please install CopyTrans Contacts.

Then, click Start.

Before going any further, make sure you have the correct version of iTunes or Apple drivers. If this is not the case, you are not without recourse, CopyTrans has created support for help.

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer.
  2. Confide that you trust him.
After only a few minutes you will see your SMS load. Note that the loading time depends on the number of messages and photos you have (in addition to those from third-party applications, such as  Viber or  WhatsApp ).
  3. The list of your contacts is displayed.
Now select the conversations you want to keep and export.
  4. Click Export Selection (top left), different export formats are available.

We chose the Word format and chose the location of our backup.
Check that the backup and copy have been successfully completed.

And now, your SMS with their emoticons have been transferred!
